About Crossword Puzzle Lab

Crossword Puzzle Lab makes crosswords for people who want to finish one. Most puzzle sites chase expert solvers with tricky grids and clever misdirection. We make friendly puzzles for everyone else: a retired teacher with a morning coffee, a grandparent and grandchild sharing a tablet, a class of fourth graders reviewing their science words, a care-home activities group working through one big printed grid together.

What you'll find here

  • Themed crosswords built around one topic, such as a holiday, an animal group or a school subject, with 10 to 14 answers that cross each other.
  • The Easy Crossword series: classic symmetric grids of everyday words, the kind with black squares, in 9×9, 11×11 and 13×13 sizes.
  • Three clue sets on every grid. The same puzzle can be Easy, Medium or Hard, so a family or a class can share one grid and each solver picks a level.
  • Play or print. Every puzzle works in the browser, with a proper keyboard on phones, and prints as a PDF with the answer key on the last page. A large-print copy sits next to it.

How the puzzles are made

Grids are built by our own software from word lists we checked by hand. Every clue is written for this site, then read by a second editor who checks that it is true, fair and pitched at the right level. Clues are never copied from newspapers, books or other websites, and a program compares every clue with millions of published ones to make sure ours are our own. The full process is on our how-we-make-our-puzzles page.

Getting something wrong

We will, sometimes. Every puzzle has a "Report a clue" link. If a clue is wrong, unclear or just too hard for its level, tell us and we'll fix it, usually within a few days.
