Accessibility

We want anyone to be able to solve a puzzle here, including people who use only a keyboard, a screen reader, a phone or a magnifier, and people who simply prefer big print. This page says what works today and where we still fall short.

Solving with a keyboard

  • Click or Tab into the grid, then type. Letters move along the current word.
  • Tab and Enter go to the next clue, Shift+Tab to the previous one. Space switches between Across and Down. Arrow keys move around the grid. Backspace deletes.
  • The clue level buttons, Check, Reveal and the print links are real buttons and links with a visible focus outline.

Screen readers

  • The full clue lists are ordinary text on the page, in Across and Down order with their numbers and letter counts.
  • The current clue is announced in the clue bar as you move, and Check results are announced ("2 squares to look at again").
  • Each grid square reports its clue number and letter. Moving square by square through a large grid is slow with a screen reader; the printable PDF and its answer key are often easier.

Phones and tablets

On touch screens the puzzle shows its own letter keyboard, so the phone's keyboard never covers the grid, never autocorrects and never zooms the page. The clue bar sits just above the keys, with arrows to move between clues.

Large print and zoom

  • Every puzzle has a large-print PDF: one big grid on the first page, clues at 16 point on the next, and the answer key last.
  • The site zooms to 200% without losing content, and the grid grows with the page.
  • Right, wrong and revealed squares are marked by more than color: wrong letters are struck through and revealed letters are shown in a different style.

Known gaps

The crossword maker is newer and hasn't had the same testing with screen readers as the puzzles. If something doesn't work for you, please tell us what device and software you were using and we'll fix it.
