Cold mornings, warm drinks and the jobs that come with the first big freeze: this puzzle covers the season from the front porch to the living room. You'll find words about staying warm, the things that form along the roof edge, outdoor fun on the ice and how some animals get through the cold months.

Easy clues are the default and suit beginners, including anyone trying their very first crossword. Medium leans on a little wordplay, and Hard is a fair challenge for regular solvers.

Nothing in the grid is tied to one date, so it works anywhere from December to early March. Several answers are compound words, which new solvers soon get used to.

Using this puzzle

On a snowy day when outings are canceled, a stack of these in the activity room gives residents something to settle into. Libraries can leave copies at the front desk through January.

At home, it's a natural fit for an afternoon by the window with something hot to drink. If you're printing for someone with low vision, choose the large-print PDF.
